Record Store Day 2013, Where To Go, What To Buy

Record Store Day 2013, Where To Go, What To Buy

What’s better than having a birthday? Having a birthday and a pre-birthday, which is what I’ve considered Record Store Day to be for me during its six-year history. More than 700 independently owned record stores nationwide will be participating in the April 20 celebration of music, with in-store performances and special and rare releases—often on vinyl. I’ll be celebrating getting one more year’s worth of “distinguished” April 28 by buying myself something awesome. This year, I’ll be scouting shelves for a limited-edition 10th-anniversary re-release of Elephant by The White Stripes, one of my favorite bands.

Speaking of the indie-rock girl/boy duo, White Stripes vocalist and record store/label owner Jack White is this year’s Record Store Day “ambassador,” and perfectly summed up the beauty and importance of experiencing music on vinyl in a statement on RecordStoreDay.com. “We need to re-educate ourselves about human interaction and the different between downloading a track on a computer and … getting turned on to music that you can hold in your hands and share with others,” he says.

Here’s a list of what local music stores have happening this Record Store Day. For lists of exclusive Record Store Day releases you can treat yo’self to (and a hilariously noneducational video about how records are made, featuring White himself), visit RecordStoreDay.com.

Three exclusive art prints will be available to purchase as well, by artists Ben Hibshman, Anthony Lucero and Travis Bone (FurTurtle.com).
